Desk

Image
Bugatti, Carlo, Desk , 1895, (Metropolitan Museum of Art).   How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? The date of creation is within the era of Art Noveau. There is a handcrafted quality to this piece of furnature. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? Unlike all of the previous funtional pieces, without the title, this would not be identifiable as a desk.  Why is this example important to you? When a stylized piece of furnature does not look like that particular piece of furnature, this shows a whole new level of creative expression. The artist was not attempting to confrom to what a desk was, they were making art into a desk. The Water Lily Bed

Image
Majorelle, Louis,  The "Water Lily" bed , 1902-1903, (Musée d'Orsay).   How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? This bed was created within the era of Art Noveau This bed has the motif of nature and the handcrafted quality in the craftmanship. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? All previous functional objects were used, but you would not sit on any of them let alone sleep on them. Why is this example important to you? Everything in this piece has handcrafted qualities. Even the bedding is not typical, rather it is also stylized in natural forms to match the bedframe with water lilies incorperated into its design. Aquarium window

Image
Aquarium window by Jacques Gruber (1904), glass, (Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy). How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? The date of creation is within the timeframe of Art Noveau. There is the motif of nature and the handmade qualities in the design. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? The last two objects were functional in the way that they would be actively used by those who owned it, this work is an everyday architectural element that only the very wealthy have the budget to decorate. Windows are very expensive and this type of window would be much more. Why is this example important to you? The area surrounding the window looks plain in comparison. This window brings life to the architecture of the building. Having art in everyday items is wonderful. Lampada da Tavolo Pomb Lily

Image
Louis Comfort Tiffany, Lampada da Tavolo Pomb Lily, 1900-10 ca. How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? This item was made within the timeframe of art noveau. This item has the motifs of nature and the hand crafted quality, especially in the lamp's stand. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples?. While the previous work was functional, this work, at least expectedly, is electrical. This is a whole different level of functionality. Why is this example important to you? The lamp shade appears to have a watercolor-esc design and the stand looks hand crafted. The level of craftmanship in this type of object, that is typically overlooked in an average home, brings life to its surroundings. Begonia Rose Cup

Image
Galle, Emile. Begonia Rose Cup. 1894. glass How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? The date of creation is within the expected time frame of the era dedicated to Art Nouveau The motif of nature is present as well as a handmade like quality. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? I notied that the majority of my examples were 2D and mostly graphic designs. This week and the next will be dedicated to 3D works Why is this example important to you? While Art Noveau is a style of artwork, majorly graphic design, the style led itself into creations of practical use, such as a cup. Thinking of the mass produced funcional items used today, it would feel almost glamourous to have everything be decorated in this particular style.  Bibliography “Art Nouveau Glass.” Wikipedia , 3 Aug. 2022, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Nouveau_glass#.

Ophelia

Image
MacDonald, Francis. Ophelia . 1898. Watercolor. 29 x 12.4 cm.  How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? This work has depiected a figure of a woman with hand drawn qualities in the style. If assumptions are correct, there is also the inclusion of nature though the possible wind or clear water implied through faint lines. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? Unlike all of the previous examples, this artowork was created by a woman. Why is this example important to you? While on my search for examples to analyze on this blog, I had noticed that all I had found were by men and most of the diversity was from the different European countries they were from. This caused me to reevaluate the work I was choosing and so I made an effort to find an artist that did not fit the standard descriptions. When I found the artist Francis Macdonald, I looked for her works that embodies the Art Nouveau style (she painted in many styles). This work was the most captivating b

Princess Hyacinth

Image
Mucha, Alphonse. Princess Hyacinth. 1911.Colour Lithograph. 125.5 x 83.5 cm. How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? This artwork, in addition to being created during the duration of the era of Art Nouveau, depcts a combination of the defining qualities of the art movement. The figure of a woman, the hand-drawn qualities, and the background depicting snow falling (nature) are amoung the most notable evidences of this. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? Unlike The Princess Stones: Emerald, the facial features on the face are not bold although, they do not depict joy or playfullness. However, unlike the menacing nature of the last artwork, this figure looks as though they are waitig or that they are unimpressed (I am not a great facial reader though!). Unlike Trellis, this is figure centrall, not design central. Although, like both, they do portray some inclusion of geometric and less organic shapes, but the approach is quite different. Unlike Avenue to

Avenue to Schloss Kammer

Image
Klimt, Gustav. Avenue to Schloss Kammer. 1912. Oil on Canvas.110 x 110 cm. How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? This piece of art has the relavent motifs of Art Nouveau. It has the natural forms and hand made qualities that define the era, and although it does not portray a woman as a key figure, that is not a requirement.  What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? Unlike my first example, this artwork does not have a key central figure since this is a landscape piece with some exterior architectural elements. Unlike my second example, this piece is more realisic in its compostion and the overall compination of the exterior and the natural elements. Why is this example important to you? This arwork creates a subttle, but great depth of perception. The trees create an outline of the exterior which almost creates the illiusion that makes the eyes move through the forrestry to find the central subject of this artwork. To me, this is important because the art

Trellis

Image
Morris, William and Webb, Philip. Trellis . 1864. block print in distemper colors, 68.6 x 54.6 cm. (Purchase, Edward C. Moore Jr. Gift, 1923).         .  How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? The hand-drawn nature, the date, and the inclusion of nature all point towards this picec being relavent to the Art Nouveau style. What is diffe rent about this example from previous examples? Unlike the previous example, this artwork seems more playfull rather than intense. While the color sceme is quite similar, the overall use of these colors has been used to create a peaceful theme. Why is this example important to you? The incorperation of the grid, without making a ridgid compostion, is pleasent. The work takes geometric shapes and incorperates them to appear more natural without appearing out of place. The Precious Stones: Emerald

Image
Mucha, Alphones Maria.  The Precious Stones: Emerald.  1900. colour lithograph, 67.2 x 30 cm. (Mucha Trust). How and why is it relevant to your theme/style? This artwork meets the described characteristics of the Art Nouveau style in art history. Besides being within the relative timeframe of the Art Nouvea era in art history, this artwork encompasses the defining attributions of the natural and hand made. This alongside of the use of nature, confims the argument that this artwork is relavent to my chosen style. What is different about this example from previous examples? As this is my first blog post, there are not previous examples to compare.  Why is this example important to you? Origionally, I had found this artwork in a series of panels by the artist composed together in a single image. My reason for choosing this particular artwork is because, unlike the panels the tones used and the description were outliers from the rest of the panels. Unlike Ruby and Amethyst, this work was n
